THE CHALLENGE –
FAMILIES AND CHILDREN WITH CANCER
In Canada, 1700 children
are diagnosed with cancer each year to join the more than
10,000 children living with this disease. Although great
strides in treatment and care have been made, childhood
cancer is still the leading disease-related cause of death
for Canadian children. While over 75% of children survive
cancer, more than 50% of survivors of childhood cancer
face late effects of their disease and treatment, including
neurocognitive impairments, sterility and secondary cancers.
Childhood cancer has a devastating effect on parents,
siblings, extended family, friends and communities everywhere.
The mission of Tour For Kids is to raise funds for three
extraordinary camps that allow children with cancer to
share laughter and build friendships with other brave
kids from across Canada. In just 4 years, Tour For Kids
participants have helped raise $2.5 million for local
camps. Now in its 5th fantastic year in Ontario, and in
its secondary year in Alberta, Tour For Kids has established
a reputation for attracting hundreds of compassionate
and enthusiastic cyclists!
Through the camping experience, children and families
experience a renewed sense of hope, courage and a whole
new perspective on life. Kids are free to be kids again
as the focus, while at camp, is never around the disease
but rather on being a kid. Kids thrive in the fresh air,
surrounded by their friends, and special camp counselors.
Laughter replaces needles and early morning polar bear
swims replace endless rounds of chemotherapy and radiation.
Evening campfires, sing-songs, high ropes, archery, fishing,
arts and crafts or just hanging with your counselor, are
the building blocks of recovery for these children. Though
the activities change in the winter, the experience is
just as refreshing! When these kids leave camp, they are
ready again to wage war on this disease that threatens
the very essence of their lives. Thank you for your wonderful
gift and your ongoing support. Cancer camps get 100% of
their funding from corporate and private donations. They
do not receive any ongoing federal or provincial government
funding. With multiple locations staffed by health care
professionals, volunteers and camp alumni, the camps provide
tremendous emotional support coupled with various degrees
of essential medical attention. The single greatest miracle
these retreats provide is enabling children to escape
the shadows of cancer treatment and feel the thrill of
being just another kid.
Thank you for supporting
Tour For Kids. We encourage you to ride, volunteer or
donate. Please give generously and help to make a difference
in the lives of these courageous children
